Five gourmand perfumes, each paired with the dessert it recalls: from Kilian's marshmallow Princess to Roja Sweetie Aoud, plus how to tell which sweet one is yours.

Some cravings don't go away with a coffee. A pink marshmallow, a glazed donut, a cookie still warm from the oven: the sweet tooth asks, and most of us say no. There is another way to answer it. Wear it.

That is what gourmand perfumes do. The family began in 1992, when a fragrance first put caramel and praline at its centre, and today it covers everything from a whisper of vanilla to a full patisserie. Here are five we pair with the sweets they recall: crave the dessert, spray the perfume.

What makes a perfume gourmand

Vanilla

The sweet anchor of almost every gourmand. Creamy, warm, and the reason a scent reads as dessert rather than flower.

Caramel and tonka

Burnt sugar and the almond-hay sweetness of the tonka bean. They give a gourmand its toasted, golden depth.

Bakery accords

Cookie, pastry, glaze, marshmallow: built by the perfumer, not pressed from a fruit. They are what turns a sweet perfume into a specific treat.

A counterweight

The best gourmands are never sugar alone. Ginger, tea, citrus, oud or a touch of animalic warmth keeps them grown-up.

Crave it, spray it: five pairings

Each pair is one slide of the carousel above: the dessert on the left, the perfume on the right. Here is what each one smells like, what stays on skin, and when to reach for it.

1. Pink marshmallows → Kilian I Don't Need a Prince by My Side to Be a Princess

Leads: Ginger and green tea over a soft marshmallow base, composed by Honorine Blanc.

On skin: Zesty and bright at first, then fluffy, powdery sugar with a cool tea edge that keeps it from turning sticky.

Wear it: When you want sweet but light. The easiest gourmand to wear in daylight, all year.

Shop Kilian Princess

2. Chocolate donut → AromaMeta Chocolate Glazed

Leads: Chocolate and a sweet glaze, with gooey caramel and tonka bean in the heart.

On skin: Vanilla and sandalwood carry it into a creamy, comforting finish: Saturday morning at the corner shop.

Wear it: Weekends, sweaters, the first cold morning. For anyone who wants chocolate, plainly.

Shop Chocolate Glazed

3. Chocolate chip cookie → BORNTOSTANDOUT Be My Cookie

Leads: A warm baked-cookie accord, with raspberry opening bright and jammy above it. Composed by Véronique Nyberg in 2024.

On skin: Castoreum gives the dough a raw, animal edge; vanilla absolute dries it down into something close to a biscuit straight from the oven. Sweet, but deliberately a little dirty.

Wear it: When you want the sweetness to have a wink in it. Evenings, autumn, someone close by.

Shop Be My Cookie

4. Raspberry pie → Roja Sweetie Aoud

Leads: A nutty, buttery patisserie accord around rose de mai, over oud, frankincense and labdanum.

On skin: There is no raspberry in the formula: the pie is the pastry. Citrus and herbs open it, the rose gives the fruit-pink brightness, and smoky woods underneath keep it far from sugary.

Wear it: The dessert for a dinner party. Cool evenings, special occasions, when a gourmand needs to look expensive.

Shop Sweetie Aoud

5. Chocolate mandarin → Profumum Roma Dulcis in Fundo

Leads: Sicilian citrus over a rich, custardy vanilla. Two notes, done properly.

On skin: The tart, juicy orange is the bright first bite; within minutes the vanilla takes over, creme-caramel and waffle-cone warm. There is no cocoa here: the vanilla plays the part of the chocolate coating.

Wear it: Cozy evenings at home, by the fire, dessert in hand. Its name means "the sweetest is saved for last".

Shop Dulcis in Fundo

Which one is yours?

  • You want sweet but light, even in daylight: Kilian Princess.
  • You simply want chocolate: Chocolate Glazed.
  • You like your sweetness with an edge: Be My Cookie.
  • You need a gourmand for a formal evening: Sweetie Aoud.
  • You love vanilla above everything: Dulcis in Fundo.

Sampled by the mL

Gourmands change more on skin than almost any other family: the sugar of the first minute is never the vanilla of the third hour. So test before you commit to a bottle. All five come as samples.

Wear one a day for a week. The one you keep sniffing on your wrist is yours.

The short version

  • Gourmand perfumes are built on edible notes: vanilla, caramel, tonka and bakery accords.
  • The best ones balance the sugar with ginger, tea, citrus, oud or a touch of animalic warmth.
  • Five pairings: marshmallows and Kilian Princess, a chocolate donut and Chocolate Glazed, a cookie and Be My Cookie, raspberry pie and Roja Sweetie Aoud, chocolate mandarin and Dulcis in Fundo.
  • Gourmands shift on skin, so start with samples.

Questions we hear

What is a gourmand perfume?

A perfume built around edible, dessert-like notes such as vanilla, caramel, chocolate, praline, tonka or bakery accords. It smells good enough to eat, but it is still composed like any fine fragrance, with a structure that unfolds over hours.

Do gourmand perfumes smell childish?

Not when they are balanced. Sweetie Aoud sets its pastry note over oud and incense; Be My Cookie adds an animalic edge; Kilian Princess cools its marshmallow with green tea and ginger. Sweetness with a counterweight reads grown-up.

Can I wear a gourmand perfume in summer?

Choose the lighter ones. Kilian Princess and Dulcis in Fundo, with their tea and citrus, wear well in warm weather. Save Chocolate Glazed, Be My Cookie and Sweetie Aoud for autumn and winter, when warmth makes sweetness feel like comfort.
