Where to Spray Perfume: The Spray Map for Her

Where you spray decides the trail you leave. Three spray maps for her: a cloud around the whole body, a vertical trail that shows when you move, and a scent noticed up close.
Perfume is the invisible detail of a look, and the one people remember most. But even the most expensive perfume won't open up if it's sprayed in the wrong places.
Here is our spray map for her: one bottle, three ways to wear it, from the strongest trail to the soft and delicate.
The basics
Hold the bottle at a distance. Spray 1–2 times.
Two habits from our guide on how to apply perfume work with every map below: spray onto moisturized skin, and don't rub it in.
1. A cloud around the whole body
Where: hair, chest, inner elbow, behind the knee.
How it feels: the scent forms a balanced sphere, softer and with a more dynamic trail.
For the hair, perfumer Sylvaine Delacourte suggests spritzing your brush or comb rather than the hair itself, so the alcohol doesn't dry it out. The hair then releases the scent with every movement.
2. Projection: a vertical trail
Where: hair, nape, behind the knee, or (!) the ankles.
How it feels: the strongest, “mile-long” vertical trail that shows when you move. The scent flows in streams.
The spots run in one line down the back of the body: a scent column. It is the map for sillage at its strongest; sillage, as Delacourte defines it, is “the trail you leave behind you.”
3. Projection at torso level
Where: chest, inner elbow, belly. You can also spray your clothes.
How it feels: the scent wraps the upper body. Others notice it when they come close; it shows when you're still.
On clothes, the scent stays true: Chanel notes that fabric preserves the integrity of the original fragrance, and recommends spraying the inside of the garment or its lining. Choose natural fabrics and keep perfume off light colors, which it can stain, Delacourte adds.
The short version
- Hold the bottle at a distance. Spray 1–2 times.
- A cloud around the whole body: hair, chest, inner elbow, behind the knee. A balanced sphere, softer, with a more dynamic trail.
- A vertical trail: hair, nape, behind the knee or (!) the ankles. The strongest trail; it shows when you move.
- Torso level: chest, inner elbow, belly, and your clothes if you like. Noticed up close; it shows when you're still.
Questions we hear
Where should I spray perfume for the strongest trail?
Follow the vertical trail: hair, nape, behind the knee, or the ankles. It is the strongest of the three maps, and it shows when you move.
Where should I spray perfume so only people close to me notice it?
At torso level: chest, inner elbow and belly. The scent wraps the upper body, and others notice it when they come close.
Can I spray perfume in my hair?
Yes: both the cloud and the vertical trail start there. Delacourte suggests spritzing your brush or comb instead, so the alcohol doesn't dry out your hair.
Is the spray map different for men?
The three maps are the same; a few spots change, and men skip two: behind the ear and freshly shaved skin. See the spray map for him.
