Where to Spray Perfume: The Spray Map for Him

Where you spray decides the trail you leave. Three spray maps for him: a cloud around the whole body, a vertical trail that shows when you move, and a scent noticed up close.
Perfume is the invisible detail of a look, and the one people remember most. But even the most expensive perfume won't open up if it's sprayed in the wrong places.
Here is our spray map for him: one bottle, three ways to wear it, from the strongest trail to the soft and delicate, with tips for men from perfumer Sylvaine Delacourte.
The basics
Hold the bottle at a distance. Spray 1–2 times. Skip behind the ear and freshly shaved skin.
Behind the ear, the skin produces a lot of sebum, which can interact negatively with perfume, Delacourte explains; she prefers the base of the neck or the hairline. And on wounds or irritated skin, she warns, the alcohol in a fragrance can cause a burning sensation. If you shave every day, FashionBeans' editors advise skipping freshly shaved skin to lessen the chance of irritation.
Two habits from our guide on how to apply perfume work with every map below: spray onto moisturized skin, and don't rub it in.
1. A cloud around the whole body
Where: nape, chest, inner elbow, behind the knee.
How it feels: the scent forms a balanced sphere, softer and with a more dynamic trail.
On the men's map, the nape takes the hair's place. Delacourte names the nape of the neck and the hairline among the places to apply eau de parfum, and for men she points to the torso and the neck.
2. Projection: a vertical trail
Where: hairline, nape, behind the knee, or (!) the ankles.
How it feels: the strongest, “mile-long” vertical trail that shows when you move. The scent flows in streams.
The spots run in one line down the back of the body: a scent column. It is the map for sillage at its strongest; sillage, as Delacourte defines it, is “the trail you leave behind you.”
3. Projection at torso level
Where: chest, inner elbow, belly. Or a cloud inside the jacket.
How it feels: the scent wraps the upper body. Others notice it when they come close; it shows when you're still.
The jacket is Delacourte's tip for men: a cloud of perfume inside the jacket, or on a scarf. On fabric, the scent stays true: Chanel notes that clothing preserves the integrity of the original fragrance. Choose natural fabrics and keep perfume off light colors, which it can stain, Delacourte adds.
The short version
- Hold the bottle at a distance. Spray 1–2 times. Skip behind the ear and freshly shaved skin.
- A cloud around the whole body: nape, chest, inner elbow, behind the knee. A balanced sphere, softer, with a more dynamic trail.
- A vertical trail: hairline, nape, behind the knee or (!) the ankles. The strongest trail; it shows when you move.
- Torso level: chest, inner elbow, belly, or a cloud inside the jacket. Noticed up close; it shows when you're still.
Questions we hear
Where should I spray cologne for the strongest trail?
Follow the vertical trail: hairline, nape, behind the knee, or the ankles. It is the strongest of the three maps, and it shows when you move.
Where should I spray cologne so only people close to me notice it?
At torso level: chest, inner elbow and belly, or a cloud inside the jacket. The scent wraps the upper body, and others notice it when they come close.
Should I spray cologne behind my ears?
Delacourte advises against it: the skin there produces a lot of sebum, which can interact negatively with perfume. She prefers the base of the neck or the hairline.
Is the spray map different for women?
The three maps are the same; a few spots change, starting with the hair. See the spray map for her.
