Harmony & Meditation: Five Perfumes for the Quiet Hour

Some scents are worn for no one but you. The notes that slow things down, and five perfumes for the quiet hour, from a sunlit sandalwood to a pine-and-incense fire.
Some perfumes are worn for other people. These are worn for you: on the mat, at the early hour, at a quiet desk, when you want your mind to drift away from the day.
That is why the quiet hour belongs to the grounding notes: incense, cedar, sandalwood, tea poured slowly. Harmony & Meditation is one of our seven mood collections, scents chosen for how you want to feel. Here are the notes that do the slowing down, and five perfumes, for her and for him, that wear them best.
The key notes
Frankincense
Resinous, balsamic, smoky, with pine-like and lemony facets. A temple, lit.
Cedarwood
Virginia cedar, dry and clean. It sits gracefully under incense: the wood the smoke settles on.
Oolong tea
Creamy, floral, toasty, nutty. Tea poured slowly.
Sandalwood and palo santo
Creamy wood and sweet, resinous smoke: the grounding. Lavender or clary sage do the calming.
Five for the quiet hour
All five are in our Harmony & Meditation collection, and each wears differently: what leads, what stays on skin, and when to reach for it.
1. Initio Paragon
Leads: Clary sage and lavender over sandalwood and palo santo: a clean, empty, sunlit room.
On skin: Herbal and green for half an hour, then a soft, creamy sandalwood with a dry palo santo smoke; eight hours.
Wear it: The mat, the early hour, the quiet desk. Any season.
2. Etat Libre d'Orange Soul of My Soul
Leads: Incense with iris butter, rose and suede: smoke that feels like warmth rather than church.
On skin: Powdery rose-iris and cool incense for an hour, then a soft suede-incense glow for eight hours.
Wear it: A slow evening with the lights down. Autumn and winter.
3. Rosendo Mateu Nº 1
Leads: Tea leaf and bergamot over sandalwood and iris: daylight incense, clean and dry.
On skin: Bright tea-citrus for an hour, then a soft, slightly powdery sandalwood that stays six hours, discreet.
Wear it: The daytime one: a morning meditation, a walk before work. Spring and summer.
4. Profumum Roma Arso
Leads: Pine, resin and incense over cedar and a soft leather: the walk in the woods and the fire after.
On skin: Green pine and cold smoke for an hour, then a warm, resinous incense that lasts twelve hours.
Wear it: A cabin, a cold evening, a fire. Autumn and winter.
5. D.S. & Durga Bowmakers
Leads: Resins, mahogany and maple, with a hint of violin rosin: a luthier's workshop.
On skin: Warm sawdust and varnish from the first minute, mellowing to a sweet, dry wood that lasts eight hours.
Wear it: For the one who likes the smell of a workshop. Autumn through spring.

Sampled by the mL
Calm is personal: one person's quiet is incense, another's is pine smoke or warm sawdust. The difference between these five shows only on your skin, an hour in. So test before you commit to a bottle: all five come as samples.
Wear one for a week of quiet hours. The one that slows your breathing is yours.

Questions we hear
What perfume is good for meditation or yoga?
Something grounding and soft: sandalwood, cedar, palo santo, a little incense, with lavender or clary sage to calm. Paragon is built exactly that way; Nº 1 is the lightest, for daytime.
Does incense perfume smell like church?
Not necessarily. Soul of My Soul softens it with iris, rose and suede, so the smoke reads as warmth; Nº 1 is daylight incense, clean and dry. Arso is the most smoky of the five, and the longest-lasting.
Can I wear these to a yoga class?
Keep it to one spray of something close: Paragon or Nº 1. Arso and Bowmakers are better saved for your own quiet hour at home.
