A work perfume should help you think, not announce you. The notes that do it, and four focus scents for her, from a powdered iris to an oolong tea that stays close all afternoon.

A work perfume has a narrow brief. It should keep you sharp, sit at conversation volume, and still be there when the meeting runs late. Nobody at the next desk should be able to name it.

That is why the working day belongs to the quiet, dry notes: woods, iris, tea, soft leather. Focus & Flow is one of our seven mood collections, scents chosen for how you want to feel; this one is for staying centered and confident at work or while studying. Here are the notes that do the focusing, and four perfumes for her that wear them best.

The key notes

Cedarwood

Virginia cedar, the pencil wood, distilled from recycled chips. Dry and clean: a freshly sharpened pencil, which is exactly the mood.

Iris

Powdery, buttery and woody, with violet nuances. Six years from planting to perfume: three in the ground, three drying. On skin it reads as cool polish.

Tea

Serene, clear, restorative, slightly woody-smoky. The note that reads beside you rather than ahead of you.

Suede

Soft, leathery, slightly floral, and much subtler than smoky leather. Confidence at conversation volume.

Four for the working day

All four are in our Focus & Flow collection, and each wears differently: what leads, what stays on skin, and when to reach for it.

1. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Femme

Leads: Iris, powdery, buttery and woody, over amyris, a soft resinous wood that smells like a quieter sandalwood.

On skin: Lemon blossom and orange for the first half hour; by lunch it is powdered wood on the wrist and nothing in the room.

Wear it: The Work & Presence pick in the For Her wardrobe. Autumn through spring.

2. Creed Aventus for Her

Leads: Green apple and pink pepper over rose and sandalwood: bright, fruity, faintly spicy, on a soft peach-musk base.

On skin: Tart apple and citrus first, then a clean rose on creamy wood that stays close, polished and easy to sit next to.

Wear it: For the woman who leads the meeting: bright enough for the morning, polished enough to stay on after work.

3. Memo Paris French Leather

Leads: Suede, soft, leathery and slightly floral, with clary sage and its bergamot-tea-lavender nuance keeping it green.

On skin: Lime and juniper for ten minutes, then the suede arrives and stays: a new handbag, at conversation volume, for six hours.

Wear it: The confident one: the presenter, the negotiator, the one who leads the meeting. Never loud.

4. Nishane Wulong Chá

Leads: Oolong tea, creamy, toasty and nutty, with a dusting of nutmeg; fig and musk underneath.

On skin: Bergamot and mandarin for a moment, then tea leaves in a warm cup; five or six hours, always close.

Wear it: For the thinker: long focus sessions, writing, study. Fully unisex.

Which one is yours?

  • You want the quietest, most polished one: Amyris Femme.
  • You lead the meeting and stay on after work: Aventus for Her.
  • You present, pitch or negotiate: French Leather.
  • You need hours of deep focus, writing or study: Wulong Chá.

Sampled by the mL

A work perfume is judged by the people around you at hour four, not by you at minute one. The difference between these four shows only on skin, after lunch. So test before you commit to a bottle: all four come as samples.

Wear a different one each workday. The one nobody comments on, and you keep reaching for, is yours.

Questions we hear

What is a good perfume to wear to the office?

Something that stays close and dry: iris, cedar, tea, soft suede. Amyris Femme is the quietest of the four here; French Leather is the most assertive, and still never loud.

How many sprays of perfume for work?

One or two. A work scent should reach the person sitting next to you, not the person across the room. Where to put them is in our spray map for her.

Are these perfumes only for women?

No. Wulong Chá is fully unisex, and French Leather is worn by men too. They are here because they sit well in a woman's working wardrobe. The men's side of this mood is in Focus & Flow for Him.
