A date perfume has to do something difficult: be noticed at arm's length and remembered after you leave. Magnetic, never overwhelming. The kind of scent that makes someone lean in.
That is why the evening belongs to the sensual notes: rose, jasmine, musk, amber. The key notes
Damask rose
Passionate, velvety, regal, with green, spicy and honey facets. Grown in Bulgaria and Turkey; it takes four tonnes of petals to make a kilo of rose otto.
Jasmine sambac
A fresher, greener, fruitier jasmine, with an orange-blossom sweetness. Luminous where classic jasmine is heavy.
Musk
Skin-soft, clean, intimate, a powdery warmth. The note that makes someone lean in.
Amber accord
Warm, powdery, vanilla-like sweetness underneath the flowers. Candlelight.
Five for the evening

1. Parfums de Marly Delina
Leads: Turkish rose, velvety, jammy and a little green, with lychee and rhubarb sharpening it, and cashmeran and vanilla behind.
On skin: Fruit and rose bright for the first hour, then a soft, powdery rose on musk and vanilla; eight hours, close after three.
Wear it: The evening rose that never feels old. Spring through autumn.
2. Amouage Guidance
Leads: Osmanthus, apricot-skin and lightly leathery, and rose over sandalwood and a soft, clean incense.
On skin: Pear and apricot at first, then a warm floral glow that stays creamy and smoky-soft for six to eight hours.
Wear it: For a dinner where the lighting is low. Autumn and winter evenings.
3. Memo Paris Madurai
Leads: Three jasmines, sambac, grandiflorum and a green jasmine accord, turned gold with turmeric, over soft suede.
On skin: Big, luminous jasmine for two hours, warm and spiced by the third; six hours, then a suede-jasmine skin scent.
Wear it: Jasmine for someone who is not shy about it. Warm evenings.
4. Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajád Extract
Leads: Damask rose over vanilla and leather, with a shiver of mint and a red-fruit hibiscus-tea note running through it.
On skin: Cool and minty-rosy for twenty minutes, then a deep, sweet, leathery rose that lasts ten hours and projects for three.
Wear it: The rose for a cold night and a warm coat. Autumn through winter.
5. Amouage Epic 56 Woman Extract
Leads: Rose and jasmine spiced with cinnamon and cumin, over oud, olibanum and amber: regal, warm, quietly smoky.
On skin: Cinnamon and pink pepper first, then a deep velvet rose on smoky resins; an extract, so ten to twelve hours on skin.
Wear it: The grand entrance of this edit. Winter evenings and special occasions; one spray is enough.

Questions we hear
What is the best perfume for a date?
A warm floral that stays close: rose or jasmine over musk and amber. Delina is the easiest to love; Guidance the most intimate; Epic 56 the most dramatic.
How much perfume should I wear on a date?
Less than for a party. Two sprays of Delina or Madurai, one of the extracts, Hibiscus Mahajád and Epic 56. Where to put them is in our spray map for her.
Is rose perfume old-fashioned?
Not these. Delina sharpens its rose with lychee and rhubarb, Hibiscus Mahajád adds mint and leather, Guidance turns it into apricot-skin osmanthus. Rose is only old-fashioned when it is worn alone and powdered.
