A morning perfume has one job: to wake you up. The notes that do it, and five fresh perfumes for her and for him, from the 1916 cologne to a citrus that still reads like a jacket.

A morning perfume has one job: to wake you up. Not to last until midnight, not to fill a room. To do what cold water and the first coffee do, and then step back.

That is why the morning belongs to the freshest notes in perfumery: citrus peel, green leaves, bright spice. Morning Boost is the first of our seven mood collections, scents chosen for how you want to feel. Here are the notes that do the waking, and five perfumes, for her and for him, that wear them best.

The key notes

Bergamot

Bright, zesty and nuanced, with a floral, slightly bitter undertone. It is cold-pressed from the peel in Calabria, and it has opened colognes for as long as colognes have existed.

Lemon

Sharp, clean, acidic. Cold-pressed from the peel too. The cleanest wake-up in the palette.

Mint

Cool, bracing, menthol-fresh and sweet-herbal, with a green, grassy undertone. It is distilled from leaves cut just before the plant flowers, when the menthol peaks. Cold water on the face.

Ginger and cardamom

Ginger, from Madagascar, is fiery, sparkling, lemony and rooty; its oil is distilled from the dried root. Cardamom, from seeds grown in Guatemala, is woody, camphoraceous and green. Together they give sparkle without weight.

Five for the morning

All five are in our Morning Boost collection, and each wears differently: what leads, what stays on skin, and when to reach for it.

1. Acqua di Parma Colonia

Leads: Sicilian citrus (lemon, bergamot, bitter orange): bright, zesty, a little bitter. Rosemary and lavender keep it herbal.

On skin: loud for twenty minutes, present for two hours, gone by the time the coffee wears off. The 1916 formula, doing its job.

Wear it: the morning cologne of record. Every season, first thing after the shower.

Shop Acqua di Parma Colonia

2. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Forte Mandarine Basilic

Leads: mandarin, the sweetest and gentlest citrus, juicy and honeyed, with basil's green, anise-edged freshness on top.

On skin: a rose-and-honey heart follows, with a sandalwood hush that outlasts the commute. Still bright at hour three.

Wear it: on a sunny morning, if you find classic cologne too austere. Spring and summer.

Shop Mandarine Basilic Forte

3. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celestia

Leads: lime and mint together, cold water twice over, with blackcurrant leaf keeping it green rather than sweet.

On skin: a cold, clean cloud that thins to mimosa and white musk within the hour. It wants three or four sprays, by design.

Wear it: the gentlest of the five. Hot weather, close to the skin.

Shop Aqua Celestia

4. Parfums de Marly Greenley

Leads: green apple over bergamot, fruity the way cut fruit is, not candy, with cashmeran giving it a body no cologne has.

On skin: a sharp first bite, an hour of crisp apple, then cedar and clean musk that carry it to lunch.

Wear it: if citrus colognes feel thin on you. Spring to early autumn.

Shop Greenley

5. Clive Christian 20 Iconic Masculin

Leads: petitgrain and mandarin, with pink pepper behind. Petitgrain is green, brisk, woody citrus from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange.

On skin: it starts as a cologne and ends as something else: Haitian vetiver and cedar take over by the second hour.

Wear it: morning freshness that still reads like a jacket. Shower straight into a meeting.

Which one is yours?

  • You want the classic: Colonia.
  • Classic cologne feels too austere: Mandarine Basilic Forte.
  • You want it light and close, for the heat: Aqua Celestia.
  • Citrus disappears on your skin: Greenley.
  • Your morning ends in a meeting: 20 Iconic Masculin.

Sampled by the mL

Fresh perfumes are the hardest to judge from a blotter. Every opening is citrus; the difference between these five shows only on skin, an hour in. So test before you commit to a bottle: all five come as samples.

Wear a different one each morning. The one you reach for again is yours.

The short version

  • A morning perfume has one job: to wake you up. Fresh, bright and gone by lunch is fine.
  • The notes that do it: bergamot, lemon, mint, ginger and cardamom.
  • Five for the morning: Acqua di Parma Colonia, Guerlain Mandarine Basilic Forte, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celestia, Parfums de Marly Greenley, Clive Christian 20 Iconic Masculin.
  • Test fresh perfumes on skin, not paper, and start with samples.

Questions we hear

What is a good perfume to wear in the morning?

Something fresh: citrus, mint, green notes or a light spice like ginger. Acqua di Parma Colonia is the classic. If citrus fades too fast on you, Greenley and Mandarine Basilic Forte stay longer.

Are morning perfumes for men or for women?

Both. Fresh citrus colognes have been worn by men and women alike since the first eau de cologne, and all five here work on anyone. Clive Christian's is the most tailored, Guerlain's the softest.

Why does a citrus perfume fade so fast?

Citrus oils are among the lightest, most volatile materials in a perfume, so they evaporate first. That is why a classic cologne is loud for twenty minutes and gone in two hours. For longer wear, choose a fresh scent built on a base: cashmeran and cedar in Greenley, vetiver in 20 Iconic Masculin, sandalwood in Mandarine Basilic Forte.

How do I make a fresh perfume last longer?

Spray it onto moisturized skin, don't rub it in, and add a spray to your clothes. More in How to Apply Perfume and in our spray maps for her and for him.
